The Canadian Electrical Code, Part I (CSA C22.1), published by CSA Group, sets out safety requirements for electrical installations.
The Code is not itself a single national law. Provinces and territories adopt it through their legislation, often with amendments. The applicable edition and requirements therefore depend on where the installation is located.
Which edition of the Code applies?
The 2024 edition of the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I, is CSA C22.1:24 (26th edition). Confirm which edition has been adopted in the jurisdiction where you will install the sign.
The edition of the Canadian Electrical Code in force varies by province or territory. Jurisdiction-specific amendments and transition provisions may also apply.
How does the Code apply to electric signs?
Section 34, “Signs and Outline Lighting,” addresses electrical installation requirements specific to signs and outline lighting. Other applicable sections of the Code must also be followed. Product safety standards for electric signs and displays are addressed separately, including in CSA C22.2 No. 207.
Before installing an electric sign, consult the relevant electrical authority to confirm the applicable code edition, amendments, permit requirements and inspection procedures.
