What is a sign?

Any device, fixture, or medium that displays sign copy to attract attention or convey information of any kind and depending on the by-laws in a jurisdiction it can include its supporting structure, sign face, lighting fixtures, and all other component parts. Signs can include anything from window signs, billboards, posters, vinyl, banners, and digital displays to flags, plaques, and notices.  Each jurisdiction can have slightly varying definitions of what they consider to be a sign. For example, some jurisdictions consider painted backgrounds to be a part of the sign (and thus the sign area) because they help attract attention to the sign.

TIP: It is useful to review the definition portion of the by-laws to ensure that your understanding of terms is the same as the jurisdiction.
NOTE: Signs do not always need copy to be considered a sign.  Window graphics may only show photos, but they are still considered a sign.
