Before exporting an electric sign

Canadian approval does not automatically establish compliance in another country. Before manufacturing or shipping an electric sign for export, confirm the destination market’s product safety, marking, documentation and installation requirements.

Check that the sign is suitable for the destination’s electrical supply and intended operating conditions.

United States

Electric signs must meet the product approval and installation requirements applicable at their destination. Relevant requirements include the locally adopted National Electrical Code and applicable product safety standards, such as UL 48, Standard for Electric Signs.

OSHA recognizes Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories (NRTLs) to certify certain products for workplace use. Each laboratory has a defined scope of recognition.

Confirm that the certification body’s scope covers the applicable standard and that the sign’s certification mark covers United States requirements. Canadian certification alone does not establish US approval.

European Union and European Economic Area

Electric signs placed on the EU or EEA market must comply with all applicable product legislation. Depending on the sign’s design and features, requirements may include electrical safety, electromagnetic compatibility, restrictions on hazardous substances and radio equipment rules.

Where CE marking is required, the manufacturer must:

  • Identify the legislation applicable to the sign.
  • Complete the required conformity assessment.
  • Prepare and retain technical documentation.
  • Draw up and sign an EU Declaration of Conformity.
  • Apply the CE marking and provide the required identification, instructions and safety information.

CE marking is the manufacturer’s declaration of conformity with applicable EU requirements. It does not necessarily indicate independent testing or certification. Third-party involvement is required only where the applicable legislation specifies it.

Great Britain

Great Britain comprises England, Scotland and Wales. Product marking requirements depend on the legislation applicable to the sign.

CE marking continues to be recognized for covered product categories, including electrical equipment, under current Great Britain rules. UKCA marking is also available under the applicable UK conformity assessment requirements.

Confirm the permitted marking route and the manufacturer’s and importer’s obligations using current UK government guidance.

Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland follows a separate product conformity framework. For products covered by the relevant rules, CE marking applies.

Where mandatory third-party conformity assessment is carried out by a UK body, CE marking must be accompanied by UKNI marking. UKCA marking alone is not accepted for placing these products on the Northern Ireland market.

Other export markets

Confirm requirements with the destination’s regulator, importer and an appropriately qualified certification or conformity assessment provider. Do not assume that Canadian, US or European approval will be accepted.

Product conformity does not replace local sign permits, electrical installation requirements or inspections.
