Before installation

An approved electric sign must still be installed in accordance with the electrical code and other requirements in force where the work takes place. Product approval does not replace installation permits, notifications or inspections.

Before starting work:

  • Confirm the applicable requirements with the relevant electrical authority.
  • Obtain any required electrical permits or file the required notifications.
  • Check whether municipal sign, building or other permits are also required.
  • Ensure the electrical work is carried out by persons authorized to perform it under local requirements.

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions

Install the sign according to the manufacturer’s instructions and the conditions of its certification or field evaluation.

Check that the sign is suitable for its intended location and electrical supply. A sign approved only for indoor use must not be installed outdoors unless its approval specifically permits that use.

Modifications may affect the sign’s approval. Before making changes that could affect compliance, consult the manufacturer, the certification or evaluation body, and the relevant electrical authority.

Arrange inspections and retain records

Arrange any required inspections or assessments and follow the electrical authority’s requirements for connecting or energizing the sign.

Keep the installation instructions, approval information, permit or notification records, and any inspection or acceptance documents for future reference.
