Montreal Signs Project exhibition at Concordia

Radio-Canada CBC

I’d like to share with you some information about the Montreal Signs Project, a permanent exhibition at Concordia University. Documentary film maker Matt Soar has curated the exhibition and you can see the hard work and passion of the contributors in this exhibition.

The lighting of the signs showcases their history along with a descriptive plaque. Where available, the exhibit includes an archival photo of how the sign used to look hanging above a store or advertising a product. One particularly interesting element of this exhibition is that the signs are spread out over different floors of the building, making the tour an experience and a discovery. The signs have not been modified and in some cases, not repaired which adds to their charm and history.

Matt is passionate about this project and it can be seen in his documentary The Signmakers of Montreal (Les Enseignistes de Montréal) which features many of these signs on display and is an interesting, informative and exciting look at sign making in Montreal.

The Montreal Signs Project and the documentary are not to be missed. The documentary is to be screened at Sign Expo Canada 2018. I hope to see you there!
